The fast-paced environments we work in, coupled with long hours and challenging caseloads necessitate proactive strategies to find stability and harmony between work and home. While we shouldn’t expect to achieve perfect balance every day, we can and should work to create a sustainable rhythm that allows us to thrive both personally and professionally.

At work, I’ve employed various tactics, including using advice from seasoned CRNAs, taking advantage of workplace wellness programs, rotating call duties, if possible, and exploring flexible scheduling options. At home, I often practice relaxation techniques, engage in regular exercise and plan quality time with family and friends.

Here, I provide some tips to help ensure a healthy work-life balance.

Professionally

  • Establish clear boundaries: Set defined limits between work and home to prevent occupational stressors from infiltrating your personal time.
  • Effectively communicate: Create a supportive environment by developing direct dialogue with colleagues and leadership about concerns or conflicts.
  • Employ time management: Develop efficient time management strategies and stick to them! Doing so will help you maximize your productivity during work hours, allowing for more leisure time.
  • Use your vacation time: Take advantage of available time off to recharge and prevent burnout. If possible, plan regular breaks to step away, relax and refocus.
  • Rotate call duties: If colleagues are able and willing to collaborate, work together to establish fair on-call rotation duties to ensure the workload is distributed evenly.
  • Set realistic expectations: Identify the levels of workloads and responsibilities you can manage and be comfortable saying ‘no’ to avoid overcommitment.
  • Consider flexible scheduling: Explore the scheduling choices the facility offers, to see if there are nontraditional options that align with your personal preferences. Or consider locum tenens work, which can offer the freedom and flexibility to take assignments as they fit into your lifestyle.
