Bon Secours Mercy Health is seeking to hire a Director of Trauma for General Surgery at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia. As the new director, the responsibilities will be overseeing the quality of patient care delivered by the service and provide overall professional direction to the clinical department, unit or service of the Medical Director/Hospital Director partnership in coordination with the Departmental Chair, Chief of the Medical Staff and the Hospital Executive Committee. In addition, responsible for triage of patients and development of admission and discharge criteria for the unit, service, or department. Enforces compliance with admission and discharge criteria in conjunction with the Chair and Chief of the Medical Staff. Develops critical pathways, algorithms, or protocols applicable to unit, service, or department. Works to submit pathways, algorithms, or protocols to the Chair as well as the Executive Committee of the medical Staff for approval.

The general surgeons may perform operations to treat or prevent diseases, repair damage caused by injuries, correct deformities, and improve daily functions on an urgent and emergent basis.

Job Details

  • Diagnose internal injuries and diseases, and prescribe medication or surgery
  • Order and analyze tests like X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs
  • Decide whether surgery is warranted, based on the patient’s records, tests, and examinations.
  • Perform examinations to confirm that patients are strong enough to undergo surgery, explain the procedures, and discuss the risks involved.
  • Perform surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, disease, deformities, and patient function while adhering to regulatory and ethical protocols.
  • Determine the type of surgery that is needed, and the nurses, anesthesiologists, and others who will be required.
  • Order antibiotics, special diets, sedatives, and other prescriptions for pre- and post-operative treatment.
  • Schedule operations, coordinate the staff, plan the procedures, and order instruments and other supplies.
  • Perform operations, in accordance with accepted methods.
  • Emergency and floor consultations
  • Ordering and interpreting labs and diagnostic tests
  • Admitting history/physicals
  • Minor bedside procedures and wound care
  • Fulltime – Monday – Friday 8am to 5pm
  • Call 7 days per month.
  • Average Patients per day: 20-30
  • Practice Setting: Outpatient, Admin, Multi-specialty Group
  • Typical Day – 5 ½ days in clinic – 3 ½ days in OR – 4 hours a week admin time.
