About the Community

This city was founded in 1860 by John Bidwell, a member of one of the first wagon trains to reach California in 1843. The founding of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in 1979 would become one of the top breweries in the nation. This city now has a population of over 130,000 and a service area of six counties in Northern California. It is the largest city in California, north of the capital city of Sacramento. The city is a cultural, economic, and educational center of the northern Sacramento Valley and home to California State University, Chico, and Bidwell Park, the country's 26th largest municipal park and the 13th largest municipally-owned park. Bidwell Park is one of the largest urban parks in the world. Being at the base of the Sierra Mountains, this region offers a quality of life, kayaking, fishing, hiking, camping, wildlife, local lakes, and rivers. It is a 45-minute drive to Yuba City, 90 minutes to Sacramento, and two and a half-hour drive to either Lake Tahoe or the Pacific Ocean.
