Job Description
The Department of Medicine – Section of Pulmonary/Critical Care & Allergy/Immunology at The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) School of Medicine in New Orleans is seeking an outstanding research scientist to join our faculty at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Research. The ideal candidate will have:
1) extensive knowledge of pulmonary pathobiology, immunology, or epidemiology
2) a proven record of successful research mentorship and
3) significant and current independent research funding within the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine.
The successful applicant will be appointed to the Ernest N. Morial Asthma, Allergy, and Respiratory Disease Center Endowed Chair.
The holder of this Chair will be responsible for advancing the understanding of pulmonary disease, with particular attention to populations which have experienced significant health disparities.
The applicant’s research background may be in basic, translational, clinical, or implementation science. Specific areas of interest to current division faculty include asthma, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis & non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and critical care, although candidates with a productive research effort in any pulmonary / critical care focus are strongly encouraged to apply.
A significant component of the position will include mentoring fellows and junior faculty members in successful research endeavors.
Job Responsibilities
• Develop and lead a research program focused on pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine, or related areas such as acute respiratory failure, ARDS, sepsis, or COPD.
• Secure extramural funding (e.g., NIH, foundation grants) to support research activities.
• Conduct and publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
• Provide patient care in the inpatient and outpatient setting, including management of critically ill patients in the ICU and care for patients with complex pulmonary conditions.
• Mentor pulmonary and critical care fellows, residents, medical students, and research trainees.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, physicians, and health professionals to advance pulmonary and critical care research.
• Participate in and contribute to departmental and divisional quality improvement, educational, and clinical initiatives.
Qualifications
• Physician candidates must be board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary/critical care and/or allergy/immunology.
• For physician candidates, licensed to practice Medicine in Louisiana before hire date.
• Strong commitment to research, education, and clinical care in an academic setting.
• Demonstrated research experience with a track record of publications in pulmonary and critical care fields.
• A history of or strong potential for obtaining extramural funding (NIH, foundation grant)
