The Opportunity
Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Advocate Health, the largest academic learning health system in the nation, seek a talented leader to establish a new Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist previously performed lung transplants and is now expanding its existing Heart Transplant Program and reinitiating a Lung Transplantation Program. With over 70 pulmonary physicians in the Winston-Salem and Charlotte regions of Atrium Health, our center has a robust pipeline of patients with advanced pulmonary disease to facilitate regional Lung Transplantation development.
As the Medical Director of Advanced Lung Disease and Transplantation Program, you will work with the Respiratory Service Line Director and Section Chief to coordinate clinical operations and clinician recruitment for the pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease sarcoidosis, and lung transplant programs.
The position also offers the opportunity to capitalize on the extensive Atrium Health clinical footprint, which includes 42 inpatient and 1100 outpatient facilities, as well as the integration of Atrium Health and Advocate Aurora Health, which operates facilities in Illinois and Wisconsin. The combined entity, Advocate Health, provides care to more than 6 million patients annually and is the third largest not-for-profit health system in the United States. Research across Advocate Health is coordinated by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, which operates under a single IRB and contracts office, facilitating clinical trial execution and research integration in multiple markets of Advocate Health.
Requirements
- Licensed or Eligible for NC Medical License
- American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification In Pulmonary Disease, dedicated fellowship training in Lung Transplant preferred
- Demonstrated Leadership Skills, Present or Emerging National Stature, Demonstrable Clinical Program Operational Skills and Outstanding Clinical Training and Experience
- Clinical Experience in Lung Transplantation to Include Post Graduate Experience
- Meets the qualifications and requirements for United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) accreditation for a Lung Transplant Program

Transplant Programs
Currently, the institution is 1 of 5 transplant centers in North Carolina with one of the largest Abdominal Organ transplant centers in the Southeast and a rapidly growing Cardiac transplant center. CY 2023 volumes included 227 Abdominal Organ transplants and 21 Cardiac transplants.
