Position Overview: we are looking for a pediatrician for the Outpatient Department of a critical access Tribal hospital located on the Navajo Nation.

This clinician will care for children and adolescents living in Navajo Nation. Common conditions seen include upper and lower respiratory illnesses, rashes, GI concerns, and growth and development issues. Conditions specific to children on the Navajo reservation include high rates of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates; high rates of dental caries, obesity, pre-diabetes, and diabetes; and rarely, SCID, hantavirus, and coccidioidomycosis.

  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. The hospital is open 24 hours every day.
  • EMR: MediTech

Location & Population: This hospital serves a total population of about 20,000; 97% of the patients are American Indian/Alaska Native. It houses thirteen departments and maintains 13 physicians, two FNPs, and six other healthcare professionals.

Navajo Nation is an area that is about the size of West Virginia, with a population of ~173,000 people living on the reservation itself. There are significant health disparities on the Reservation, with an estimated 30% of people without access to clean water, 30% without electricity, and 40% or more unemployment prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hospital is within a few hours’ drive of many national and state parks, and scenic Sedona, ski resorts in Telluride and Taos, and cities such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, and Phoenix.

Candidates must be:

  • Fully licensed in the state of Arizona, and have an active AZ DEA
  • Committed to rural healthcare, and flexible in providing care in an underserved area with limited resources
  • Board-certified in Pediatrics or Internal Medicine-Pediatrics
