Job Description
Reporting to the Director and under the supervision of a Pathologist, the Pathologist Assistant performs gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens as well as autopsy procedures using established and approved procedures and protocols. The Pathologist Assistant prepares biological specimens for analysis and performance of special techniques as indicated by the pathologist. The incumbent assists in the education and training of residents, fellows and students as assigned.
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
- Independently performs as well as assists pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, evisceration, description autopsy, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomical specimens.
- Prepares tissues for microscopic examination, including preparation of frozen and permanent sections for light, electron and immunoflourescent microscopy.
- Performs postmortem examinations by functioning as the primary prosector to include external examination, in-situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, dictation of organ weights, and gross anatomic findings to find cause of death. Assures the completion of the autopsy report and proper filing for future retrieval.
- Maintains all gross room and morgue equipment, pathology archives, and archived specimens. Photographs samples for conferences and education purposes.
- Assures proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supplies and cleanliness of surgical pathology area for proper operation and safety.
- Acts as an adjunct instructor for the education of residents, fellows and students in their educational rotations as directed.
- Performs other pathology assistance duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related biological sciences field required; Master’s Degree preferred.
Experience: 1-3 years’ related grossing experience preferred.
Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:
PA Certification or eligible for PA certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
