Flight surgeons are at the heart of the aerospace medicine program. They’re responsible for the health and effectiveness of aircrew members and those who directly support flight operations and their families.
If you apply and are selected as a flight surgeon candidate, you’ll attend the eight-week Aerospace
Medicine Primary Course at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. USAFSAM is known internationally as the premier center for aerospace
education, training, consultations, aerospace medical investigations and aircrew health assessments.
As a flight surgeon, it’s part of your job to fly. You must be physically fit and be able to meet specific
qualifications that are unique to the career field.

Job Responsibilities
-Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards
-Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues
-Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles
-Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters
-Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards
-Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services
Qualifications
-Be currently enrolled in a residency program in the United States or Puerto Rico, in a specialty the Air
-Force needs
-Must not have contracted to serve a state or other party after you graduate
-Meet Air Force physical standards
-Be of good moral character
