Position Summary: An Obstetric Hospitalist is a specialized physician who provides comprehensive care to pregnant patients in a hospital setting, focusing on managing labor and delivery, high-risk pregnancies, and emergency obstetric care. The primary role is to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and fetus throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care. The Obstetric Hospitalist works closely with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, nurses, and other healthcare providers to deliver high-quality, timely care.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Labor and Delivery Care: Oversee labor and delivery, including conducting deliveries (vaginal and cesarean), performing emergency procedures, and managing complications during labor.

Emergency Obstetric Care: Provide immediate response to obstetric emergencies (e.g., postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, etc.) and ensure rapid intervention.

High-Risk Pregnancy Management: Collaborate with maternal-fetal medicine specialists to manage high-risk pregnancies, including patients with pre-existing medical conditions, multiple gestations, or pregnancy complications.

Postpartum Care: Monitor and care for patients following delivery, addressing postpartum complications, pain management, and ensuring safe discharge planning.

Inpatient Consultations: Provide consultations to other healthcare providers regarding obstetric concerns and complications.

Patient Education and Counseling: Counsel and educate patients on obstetric care, prenatal and postpartum care, and birth planning.

Collaboration with Medical Teams: Work closely with nursing staff, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and ensure a multidisciplinary approach.

Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document patient history, care plans, and progress notes in electronic health records (EHRs). Ensure all medical records are complete and compliant with hospital standards.

On-Call Duties: Provide on-call coverage for obstetric emergencies during shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and continuing medical education to enhance patient care standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
Licensure: Board certification or board eligibility in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN). Must be licensed to practice medicine in the state where the hospital is located.
Experience: Prior experience in obstetrics, preferably in a hospitalist or labor and delivery setting. Experience with high-risk obstetrics is a plus.
Skills: Excellent clinical skills, communication, and teamwork abilities. Ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification preferred.

Work Environment:

Location: Hospital labor and delivery unit or maternity ward.
Schedule: Full-time, part-time, or per diem shifts. On-call duties may be required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Demands: Ability to stand for extended periods, assist in deliveries, and respond to emergencies. Some lifting and physical activity may be required.
