The Medical Director is responsible for overseeing the medical and clinical operations of the behavioral health facility, ensuring the highest standards of care, and driving continuous improvement in service delivery. This role combines leadership, clinical expertise, and administrative oversight to support the facility’s mission of providing quality mental health and addiction treatment services. The Medical Director will work closely with the clinical team, administration, and other stakeholders to ensure that the facility complies with regulatory requirements and offers patient-centered, evidence-based treatment.
Job Responsibilities
medical/clinical and psychiatric care services provided by licensed medical staff.
• Plans, develops, administers, and evaluates medical/clinical and psychiatric service
care programs and services and the establishment and measurement of standards for
services provided to patients, including Radiology, EEG/EKG, Laboratory and
contracted clinical services.
• Establishes measures and maintains adequate levels of and standards for medical care
and treatment.
Serves as full-line supervisor.
• Assigns and reviews work.
• Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
• Counsels staff regarding work performance.
• Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
• Establishes annual goals and objectives.
• Approves time off.
• Adjusts first level grievances.
• Effectively recommends and imposes discipline, up to and including discharge.
• Prepares and signs performance evaluations.
• Determines and recommends staffing needs.
Plans, administers, and evaluates the development and implementation of policies and directives and the recruitment and retention of medical staff personnel.
• As the Chief Psychiatrist, maintains the level of staffing and documentation required by
outside accrediting agencies for Psychiatric and Medical Services for patients.
• Represents the hospital in dealing with recommendations of outside agencies or bodies
concerning Psychiatric and Medical Services.
Serves as an active high-ranking member of key facility management and treatment
committees including the Hospital Executive Committee.
• Plans, administers, and evaluates the development and implementation of policies and
directives.
• Provides leadership in the long range and short-term planning and development of
policies and strategies for meeting goals and answering findings.
• Travels in the performance of job duties.
Consults and confers with a variety of outside sources on behalf of the facility and patients such as other medical facilities, Coroner's Office, other local, city and state agencies.
• Confers with relatives and advocates on behalf of patients
Serves as Chairperson of the Facility Medical Staff Organization.
• Participates on the Medical Staff Executive Council by attending meetings, submitting
information, serving on task forces and committees and adding to the discussions of
pertinent issues.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Qualifications
Requires an Illinois license to practice medicine and an American Board of Medical Specialties Certification, or its equivalent, in Psychiatry.
Requires three years of substantive medical administrative experience in directing, planning, and evaluating a medical/clinical program.
Requires ability to supervise and coordinate staff and activities of other professional disciplines.
Requires ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with various professional disciplines.
Requires ability to travel in performance of job duties.
Working Hours
Monday-Friday with a 30-minute lunch break
