MUSC Health, the clinical enterprise of the Medical University of South Carolina, is seeking an experienced physician to provide oversight and leadership for hospital medicine services within MUSC Health’s Regional Health Network (RHN). In this pivotal role, you’ll direct hospital medicine services across multiple facilities, support hospitalists in delivering evidence-based care, and contribute to groundbreaking initiatives to enhance patient outcomes statewide.

This position will require travel to all facilities within MUSC’s Regional Health Network but will have a home base at MUSC Health – Lancaster Medical Center. Candidates will have the option to reside in nearby Charlotte, North Carolina, which is located just a short drive away and offers access to world-class dining, cultural attractions, professional sports, and an international airport.

As the Medical Director, you will split your time between:

Clinical Leadership (50%):

  • Maintain facility medical staff privileges at all MUSC RHN facilities
  • Work clinically an average of 7 hospital shifts/month

Operational Excellence (50%):

  • Collaborate with MUSC Leadership, facility managers, site medical directors, and hospitalist team members to drive key metrics and performance indicators related to hospital medicine.
  • Mentor site medical directors and other emerging leaders in hospital medicine, fostering a supportive environment for growth and implementing structured professional development programs to benefit all hospitalist leaders within the Regional Health Network.
  • Identify and lead hospital initiatives to reduce length of stay, improve patient experience and quality scores, reduce mortality and readmissions, and other identified goals and tactics.
  • Assist site medical directors and practice managers with the development, maintenance, and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Work with site medical directors and practice managers to maximize cost-effective use of staff members, including coordination of scheduling across facilities and divisions.
  • Collaborate with hospitalist teams in each division to create a cohesive team culture that values high performance and excellent patient care.
  • Perform quality assurance and take a lead role in improvement initiatives within each department.
  • On a semi-annual basis, present observations and perceived opportunities for improvement relative to hospitalist medicine and hospital operations to MUSC Leadership.
  • Assist with MUSC recruiting efforts related to hospitalist medicine in the RHN.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary $360,000 annually plus $40,000 “at risk” based on agreed-upon targets (paid once/year)
