Overview of the Position

The Director of Clinical Operations will have regional responsibilities on a day-to-day basis to implement and support these goals within the regional environments. He/she will work with other DCOs, Cancer Center/Service Line and Institutional leaders to produce a clinical environment that provides this consistent patient care experience and supports the institutional academic goals while maintaining a productive and satisfying experience for physicians and staff. Partnering with fellow DCOs and/or other leaders, the DCO will monitor the care experience and environment, report challenges and opportunities, and help identify and implement solutions that continually raise the standard of care.

Qualifications:

  • A highly respected and Board-Certified medical oncologist with broad current working knowledge of the clinical management of patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancy.
  • Extensive training and experience in the clinical and scientific aspects of solid tumor oncology and hematologic malignancies
  • Excellent working knowledge of the operational management and financial success of outpatient (including infusion center) settings of medical oncology practice
  • Track record of successfully developing and managing physicians and staff in the outpatient and infusion center settings resulting in effective clinical care operations for the care of patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies
  • Excellent working knowledge of the conduct and oversight of quality management programs for outpatient (including infusion center) settings of medical oncology practice
  • An unwavering commitment to excellence in each element of Jefferson’s tripartite mission (clinical care, academics, and research)
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communications skills that will enable him/her to work effectively and proactively across disciplines to develop strategies and solutions for Jefferson’s complex academic, scientific, and clinical environment
  • Ability to effectively plan and execute major clinical service strategies and initiatives which can raise the profile of outpatient clinical care operations in this Department to nationally recognized levels of service excellence
  • Ability to support the recruitment, development, and management of staff to support the clinical care delivered by a high-profile faculty
  • A track record of successfully encouraging and supporting medical oncologists to deliver consistent, high quality, patient care while effectively participating in clinical research trials

Major Responsibilities:

Academic, Clinical, Scientific Responsibilities

  1. Build a strong, consistent, integrated, and high-quality clinical service program in outpatient solid tumor and hematologic malignancy for Jefferson that is of national repute and is consistent with the vision of the Chair and the Clinical Deputy Director of the SKCC
    1. The Director of Clinical Operations for the Department will oversee faculty and/or faculty related operations for the Infusion Center, Outpatient Clinic, and the Department’s participation in SKCC Multidisciplinary Clinics
  1. Develop and maintain an accountable strategic and implementation plan for the above in conjunction with the Chair/Regional Vice Chair/Vice Chair of Clinical Operations
  2. Effectively partner with key colleagues and staff in related disciplines across Departments and Jefferson corporate entities to optimize the growth and reputation of Jefferson’s clinical solid tumor and hematologic malignancy services
  3. Effectively partner with key colleagues and staff in related disciplines across Departments and Jefferson corporate entities, specifically including Jefferson Health, Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson University Hospital, and others to optimize the integration and consistency of clinical care service initiatives
  4. Identify and, where possible, resolve actual and potential barriers to an effective solid tumor and hematologic malignancy clinical service across disciplines and sites of care
  5. Work closely with the Chair/Regional Vice Chair/Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, Regional Chief of Cancer Services and appropriate Directors to integrate solid tumor and hematologic malignancy clinical service activities within the Department and SKCC and across the Jefferson family of sites and facilities
  6. Facilitate successful renewal of SKCC support grant in any areas related to clinical solid tumor and hematologic malignancy programs
  7. Optimize the role of clinical service site operations in supporting the faculty in achieving meaningful levels and quality of participation in clinical trials
  8. Such related responsibilities as may be assigned by the Chair/Regional Vice Chair/Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Regional Chief of Cancer Services

Administrative and Oversight Responsibilities

  1. Overall responsibility for ensuring the quality, timeliness, consistency, and appropriateness of clinical care and consultation delivered by faculty in the Infusion Center, ambulatory clinics, or at other sites
  2. Develop and maintain an accountable, outcome oriented, objective, clinical services quality program that ensures the highest level of quality clinical care and service are delivered across disciplines and faculty for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies
  3. Maintain, update, and enforce Standards of Professional Care, including appropriate standardization of clinical policies and procedures, for the faculty that are current and reflect the Department’s commitment to quality, patient safety, the patient experience, and to become a regional and national leader in clinical reputation
  4. Ensure the vigorous investigation and fair resolution of clinical care and/or service variances related to faculty delivery of clinical care and consultation
  5. Advocate for adequate and fair allocation of resources, staff, and facilities for clinical care programs within the Department and between the SKCC and the Department
  6. Develop and regularly report to the Chair/Regional Vice Chair/Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Regional Chief of Cancer Services on key metrics of outpatient clinical care, consultation, and service delivered by the faculty and clinical service staff
  7. Organize, chair, and attend regular meeting(s) focused on outpatient clinical care operations and quality improvement
  8. Educate and advocate for workflows that support quality documentation, a data-driven strategy to improvement and ongoing monitoring of progress towards goals aligned with Departmental engagement in innovative care model programs
  9. Provide input and key data required for evaluation of faculty and staff clinical service activities
  10. Work effectively with SKCC leadership of Diversity Programs to clinical care programs are consistent with institutional and Departmental diversity policies and initiatives
  11. Ensure that updates and results of outpatient clinical care operations and quality are regularly presented to faculty, Departmental, and SKCC leadership
  12. Develop and recommend strategic objectives related to outpatient clinical care to program leaders and Chair/ Regional Vice Chair/Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Regional Chief of Cancer Services
  13. Evaluate, mentor, and manage performance and behavior (citizenship) of faculty delivering outpatient clinical care, in conjunction with appropriate Division and/or Program Directors
  14. In collaboration with appropriate Division and/or Program Directors, ensure that clinically active faculty exhibit excellent Departmental, SKCC, and institutional citizenship (e.g. regular attendance at appropriate meetings, collegiality across functional areas, compliance with Standards of Practice and Professional Behavior, etc.)
  15. Such related responsibilities as may be assigned by the Chair/Regional Vice Chair/Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Regional Chief of Cancer Services

Note that in selected sites, expertise and responsibilities may need to include the more common aspects of non-malignant hematology as well
