Position Summary

The Executive Medical Director (EMD), Surgical Specialties provides executive leadership in the clinical, operational, and financial success of the MultiCare Health System (MHS) physician enterprise within the Surgical Specialties division. The EMD reports directly to the MultiCare Medical Partners (MMP) Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and drives the strategic growth of the service line and serves as the accountable clinical leader in collaborating with the administrative leadership of the medical group and relevant facilities, including performance optimization & compliance. The EMD directs the programs and strategies resulting in successful health outcomes, patient experience, medical cost efficiency, and workplace of choice to achieve high-performing high-value care. The EMD collaborates with ambulatory and hospital leadership to implement physician enterprise strategies and program initiatives.

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Positively contributes to organizational culture, leading in alignment with organizational mission, vision, and values. Provides strategic vision, develops tactics, and monitors performance for care delivery, clinical quality, and performance improvement, at scale, across the enterprise for the Surgical Specialties division.
  • Sets objectives and facilitates execution of the highest quality clinical product, achieving key performance indicators in the domains of quality, patient outcomes, cost, and engagement.
  • Ensures all elements of care delivery within MHS facilities in the given care line adhere to the highest quality clinical performance standards.
  • Responsible for establishing, implementing, and continuously improving clinical protocols and care models within the care line, across the care continuum, aligned with system strategy and fiscal targets while ensuring care line adheres to the highest quality clinical performance standards.
  • Develops a high-performing management team and holds leaders accountable for performance of individual clinics, service lines, and collective system markets.
  • Collaborates with staff, directors, clinical medical directors, and administration to strategically manage the care line, ensuring that goals are met for the delivery of high- quality access to care and cost-effective healthcare services which are aligned with MMP & regional strategic goals.
  • Collaborates with leaders across MultiCare Health System markets to drive the performance of value-based care success in areas relevant to the care line.
  • Aligns and participates in employee and physician engagement efforts including recruitment and retention activities. Ensures the compensation methodology and incentive metrics aligned with strategic service line outcomes.
  • Designated MMP leader with accountability for discernment of all embedded MHS support services that influence the clinical product for patients cared for within the Surgical Specialties division. This includes, but is not limited to, pharmaceutical products, office and facility equipment, embedded clinical services such as behavioral health or emerging technology solutions.

Care Line Specific Responsibilities:

  • Scope includes oversight of care delivered across the continuum within the Surgical Specialties care line by employed and credentialed clinicians. Functionally, all employed physicians and APPs in the departments of General Surgery and related subspecialties, Acute Care Surgery and Surgicalist programs facilitated by MMP, Bariatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Otolaryngology, and Ophthalmology, report up to the EMD.
  • The EMD will effectively partner with key stakeholders to achieve exceptional surgical outcomes for care delivered within the ambulatory and acute care setting, including communication and enforcement of best practice and clinical policies.
  • The EMD will partner with acute care facility leaders to ensure best practice and adherence to agreed upon quality standards for care delivered by clinicians who have privileges in acute care facilities.
  • EMD will have accountability for care line participation and performance in system initiatives including relevant committee and clinical council efforts.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school (MD or DO).
  • Licensure to practice medicine in Washington State as a physician.
  • Board certification or similar accreditation in one of the following: General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology or another similar medical specialty.
  • Credentialed to practice in MHS facilities.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years clinical experience providing direct patient care.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a medical leadership role required with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a medical director or equivalent with progressive responsibilities.
  • Additional education in healthcare administration preferred.

Pay and Benefit Expectations

We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $500,000.00 - $800,000.00 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will be reflective of the appropriate step on the pay scale to which the applicant’s years of experience align.
