The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine seeks a Section Chief of Geriatrics. This position will work closely with GIM leadership, stakeholders across campus, Department, and institutional leadership to chart the course for Geriatrics quality, growth, and innovation at MUSC. As Section Chief of Geriatrics, the Director will balance the education, research, and clinical care responsibilities of the group and will provide leadership, scholarly support, and mentorship to a talented team of faculty and advanced practice providers and inspire a team that contributes to all missions of the university: clinical care, education, and scholarship. In addition to leadership responsibilities, this position will also maintain a clinical presence in both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as our Fellows clinics.
The Section of Geriatrics has 2 faculty members and an advanced practice provider, with both an outpatient and inpatient clinical practice and an ACMGE-approved Geriatrics Fellowship with 2 fellows per year.
The number of people ages 65 and older in the Charleston tri-county area is projected to grow over the next five years to make up about 25% of the population, which is well above the national average. MUSC is a 750-bed tertiary referral center with a level 1 trauma center that is committed to meeting the healthcare needs of this rapidly growing segment of our population.
Ideal Candidates:
- Board-certified MD/DO in Geriatrics
- Completed an accredited Geriatrics fellowship and/or board certified or eligible in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine Collaborative and collegial demeanor with enthusiasm for teaching.
- Possess leadership experience at an academic health center, have a minimum academic rank of Associate Professor, and be well versed in scholarship, teaching, and leadership.
- Possess outstanding leadership skills; he/she will be strongly committed to the tripartite mission of education, clinical care, and research.
- Must be comfortable working in a matrix management structure and environment.
- Experience mentoring, developing staff competency at all levels, and creating a highly accountable and high-performing team is essential.
