Job Description

Last Update: 10/03/24

To our prospective teammates,

I am the ICU Program Medical Director at Providence St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. I have been a part of Sound for 5 years and have been in the medical director role the last 3 years. I’m proud of the critical care practice we have built and welcome interest from physicians desiring a career change to explore an opportunity with our group. I’d like to share more about it, specifically about our people, practice, and purpose, as you consider options:

People
  • We are an established team of 6 physicians.
  • Various members of our team are involved in committees in the ICU and the hospital including the Critical Care Collaborative, the pharmacy/therapeutics committee, the ethics committee, and the infection prevention committee.
  • We are a tight-knit group and regularly get together for nights out or trips to the beach.
Practice
  • Providence St. John’s is a 266-bed state-of-the-art community hospital, comprehensive stroke center, and designated STEMI receiving center. We have a full range of cardiovascular services and are home to the John Wayne Cancer Institute. We have excellent collaboration with the CT Surgery and Neuroscience group.
  • We work in a 23-bed closed ICU that sees all types of critically ill patients including medical, surgical, neuro, and cardiovascular. We have a high acuity, high complexity patient population.
  • ADC is between 4-10 patients per intensivist per day.
  • The ICU has a lot of advanced circular support (VA/VV ECMO, Impella 5.5).
  • We have surgical oncology fellows who occasionally round in the ICU. We are in the process of establishing rotations for Critical Care fellows from UCR.
  • EMR: EPIC
  • We have 2 intensivists during the day and 1 at night (6am-4pm, 10am-8pm, & 8pm-6am). The schedule is 4 on 4 off, followed by 3 on 3 off.
  • Compensation is $200 per hour
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • A focus on growth and development is a key feature of Sound practices, where we aim to help teammates expand their careers locally as well as within the broader medical group.
  • We are a community-minded team and encourage our team members who want to contribute in and out of the hospital to help make our local community thrive.
