Job Description

Last Update: 6/19/24

To our prospective teammates,

I’m the system medical director for our 4 intensivist programs within the St David’s Health System located in Austin, TX. I’ve been a part of Sound for 4 years, joining the group in July of 2020 to help establish our first ICU programs in Austin at St David’s Round Rock and North Austin. Due to success at those sites, we expanded to St David’s Med Center and Heart Hospital of Austin in February of 2021. I’m proud of the critical care practice we’ve built and welcome interest from practicing critical care physicians to make a career change.

I’d like to share more about who we are and what we do — specifically about our people, practice, and purpose — as you consider your options:

People
  • We’re a closely knit, established team of 4 intensivists and 2 advanced practice providers.
  • Our team is comprised of clinicians from diverse geographic, educational, and training backgrounds who lean on and learn from each other in their approach to patient care.
  • Within the hospital, we work closely with our colleagues in other departments to ensure smooth transition of care. And many of us are active in community health initiatives through the hospital.
  • Various members of our team are involved in committees in the ICU and the hospital including the Critical Care Collaborative, pharmacy/therapeutics committee, the ethics committee, and infection prevention committee.
Practice
  • This is a full-time position that entails primarily working at St David’s Medical Center, although there may be occasional shifts at North Austin or Heart Hospital.
  • St David’s Medical Center is a comprehensive stroke center and referral center for neurosurgery and neurovascular. We have a 24-bed med/surg ICU with a 16-bed Neurocritical Care Unit. The hospital is starting an internal medicine residency program in July of 2025.
  • We have excellent relationships with consulting services like IR, Neurology, Anesthesia.
  • ECMO program started Q1 2024.
  • Physicians work in-house day shifts with minimal night call from home. Every 3rd shift entails night call from home backing up the APP who is in-house. The On-call intensivist rarely comes back into the ICU overnight – on average one instance every six weeks.
  • We are not considering 2025 fellows at this time.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • We value and support growth and development in our hospital medicine practice, allowing you to explore new opportunities locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and support involvement and contributions to community health and wellness in and out of the hospital.
