Job Description

Last Update: 6/25/24

To prospective teammates,

I’m the medical director for Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, located in Canton, Ohio. I have been a part of Sound Physicians for less than one year. I’m proud of the hospitalist practice we have built and welcome interest from advanced practice providers (APPs) coming out of training or desiring a career change. I’d like to share more about it, specifically about our people, practice, and purpose, as you consider options:

People
  • We are a closely knit, established team of 21 physicians and 6 advanced practice providers, with the support of a clinical performance nurse and hospitalist coordinator. We have nine to ten physicians and two APPs providing inpatient coverage daily (7 am to 7 pm). Daily rounding is comprised of seven or eight physicians, while the other two physicians cover swing shifts to assist with admissions. We have one physician and one APP provide night coverage (7 pm to 7 am).
  • We have providers that come from a variety of places across the world, including Palestine, India, the Philippines, and the United States (OH, PA, MI), to name a few.
  • Our providers are members of numerous committees within the organization. These include infection prevention, clinical documentation excellence, inpatient sepsis, pharmacy and therapeutics, patient safety, antimicrobial stewardship, and readmission committees.
  • Many team members have families and enjoy getting together outside the workplace. Their hobbies include soccer, hiking, eating, cooking, golfing, traveling, cricket, shopping, and bowling. We will get together for a large cookout once or twice a year as a group.
  • We proudly sponsor H1B and J1 visa candidates, and Sound has excellent in-house visa specialists and our licensing and credentialing experts. All required filing fees for the visa are paid, and services are covered by Sound.
Practice
  • We welcome the challenge of complex cases, but the ICU at Mercy Hospital is closed to the intensivists. The hospitalists are not responsible for codes or procedures. There is a newly formed Medical Emergency Response Team comprised of ICU APPs that provide 24/7 coverage for rapid responses and any other urgent overhead code, including code blues, strokes, sepsis alters and violent patients. We do admit patients to the CCU with close cardiology and intensivist support.
  • The group meets for a team huddle every Tuesday and Friday at 8 am. Most of the time, we have leaders from other departments who will give us 10–15-minute teaching topics during this time. We also have a one-hour team meeting monthly led by the medical director but intended to have engaging team involvement and discussion regarding hospital updates and workflow changes.
  • We have a seven on/ off schedule but help cover for our teammates as needed. This is especially important to us as most providers travel out of the country frequently to visit their families.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • A focus on growth and development is a key feature of Sound’s practices, where teammates can expand their careers here locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and encourage our team members who want to contribute in and out of the hospital to help make our local community thrive.
