The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine and on the UC Davis campus, with 11 Divisions divided by sub-specialty. The Department includes approximately 450 academics and 250 staff. The Division of Hospital Medicine is a 24 hour a day, 365 day a year service with a primary role of evaluation admissions from the emergency room as well as outside referral of patients. The Division consists of 14 faculty, 45 staff physicians, and 3 administrative staff.

Responsibilities

The nocturnist physician will have responsibility for patient management, admissions, and consults from the emergency department. They will secure appropriate consultation for patients that are admitted and need specialty care, and will coordinate care with ED staff to ensure appropriate patient disposition. They may also be asked to communicate with the transfer center and evaluate potential transfers from outlying facilities in the community. When not in the admitting physician role, the nocturnist may be asked to assume the role of cross-cover. Cross-cover will be responsible for addressing questions or concerns from staff regarding inpatients that are hospitalized on the hospitalist service. Shifts are organized into 8.5-hour blocks of shifts, with flexible scheduling. However once the schedule has been created, hospitalists are responsible for their scheduled shift duties.

The nocturnist will be required to work 146 night shifts during each year of the contract. One year is defined as a period of 365 days from the beginning date of the contract, or on the anniversary of the start date in subsequent years. Shifts are prorated based on start date.

The incumbent in this position will be required to have a separate appointment on the volunteer clinical faculty. This separate appointment will allow the incumbent to supervise and interact with medical students and residents.

Each Hospitalist’s standard responsibilities also includes 18 days per year of on-site administrative time. Administrative time includes monthly CQI meetings, business meetings, grand rounds and other non-patient care responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

Must posses an MD/DO license.

Must be board eligible or certified in Internal Medicine.

Must obtain Board Certification within 2 years of employment.

Possession of a valid California medical license and DEA license at the time of appointment.
