General Job Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and treat a wide range of digestive system disorders in adults and potentially children (depending on the position).
  • Conduct comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as endoscopies, X-rays, CT scans and blood tests.
  • Perform endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat digestive conditions (depending on the scope of practice).
  • Develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Manage chronic digestive conditions and provide ongoing patient care.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists and other specialists when needed to ensure coordinated care.
  • Educate patients on digestive health and disease prevention.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records for all patients.
  • Stay current on the latest advancements in gastroenterology through continuing education.

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of gastroenterology principles and practices, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention of digestive diseases.
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams.
  • Technical proficiency in performing endoscopic procedures (if applicable).
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for endoscopic procedures.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adapt to changing patient conditions.
  • Time management and organizational skills to manage a patient workload effectively.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Residency training program in internal medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Fellowship training in gastroenterology (may be preferred depending on the position).

License & Certifications:

  • Board certification in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or the AOA.
  • Active and unrestricted medical license in California.
