General Job Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and treat a wide range of digestive system disorders in adults and potentially children (depending on the position).
- Conduct comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as endoscopies, X-rays, CT scans and blood tests.
- Perform endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat digestive conditions (depending on the scope of practice).
- Develop and implement treatment plans.
- Manage chronic digestive conditions and provide ongoing patient care.
- Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists and other specialists when needed to ensure coordinated care.
- Educate patients on digestive health and disease prevention.
- Maintain accurate and complete medical records for all patients.
- Stay current on the latest advancements in gastroenterology through continuing education.
Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of gastroenterology principles and practices, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention of digestive diseases.
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams.
- Technical proficiency in performing endoscopic procedures (if applicable).
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for endoscopic procedures.
- Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adapt to changing patient conditions.
- Time management and organizational skills to manage a patient workload effectively.
Minimum Education Requirements:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
- Residency training program in internal medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Fellowship training in gastroenterology (may be preferred depending on the position).
License & Certifications:
- Board certification in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or the AOA.
- Active and unrestricted medical license in California.
