Job Summary

Geisinger is seeking a BC/BE Pediatric Emergency physician to lead Pediatric Emergency services for the departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, on the campus of Geisinger Medical Center located in Danville, Pa.

Job Duties

At Geisinger, our innovative ideas are inspired by the communities, patients, & families we serve. We do things differently to reach our unique patient population in central & northeast PA with high-quality pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) services. Our revolutionary approaches to local community outreach include tools like telemedicine, leveraging a robust EHR for pediatric-specific decision support to reach a previously PEM underserved population. Enjoy our many benefits, including educational opportunities using Geisinger’s nationally recognized SIM program, our ultrasound fellowship & state of the art ultrasound service.

A candidate with 5 years post fellowship experience will be considered for the position of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Medical Director. The successful candidate should possess inherent leadership skills and excel in areas of multidisciplinary collaboration, team building and program development. Candidates must have superior clinical and interpersonal skills and be capable of providing leadership in clinical care, medical education and research. Candidates can be fellowship trained in PEM following either pediatric or emergency medicine residency.

Geisinger Medical Center’s 9-bed and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center’s 4-bed pediatric zones were designed with babies, children, teens, and their families in mind. Using nitrous sedation, we do our best to remain an “ouch-less” ED, and with over 50 certified PEM nurses throughout the system, quality, safety, and comfort are our top priorities. Geisinger Medical Center is the receiving center for high acuity pediatric patients from 10 other system hospitals, spanning 31 counties. Geisinger Medical Center has level 1 trauma designation for adults and level 2 for pediatric patients. Children admitted from our ED are cared for in Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, a 90-bed, 5-floor on-site children’s hospital that includes a 14-bed PICU and 41-bed NICU. Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center recently transitioned to a level III NICU in 2024. Our children’s hospital provides a comprehensive range of pediatric services including a full array of medical and surgical subspecialties. We pride ourselves on an average system pediatric readiness score of 91%, well above the state average of 69%.

Reporting directly to the Chair of Emergency Medicine, candidates will have dual appointments in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics and will actively participate in resident education in both departments. Clinical duties will be primarily centered in the system’s emergency departments but will include participation in the pediatric sedation service and pediatric acute care clinic. With the support and collaboration of our Pediatric Emergency Medicine RN Program Manager, there are opportunities to lead telemedicine efforts for Geisinger’s other hospitals and expansion of PEM services to Geisinger’s northeast region.

Geisinger is seeking candidates with superior clinical and interpersonal skills and a strong desire to participate in program development, medical education, and research. Candidates must be Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship trained.

We take pride in the support we provide:

  • Competitive compensation package

  • Exceptional work/life balance with no overnight shifts and defined clinical hours - 1,544 hours/year

  • Dual appointments in Emergency Medicine & Pediatrics

  • Support from a full range of dedicated specialists and subspecialists, including in-house Neonatologist and Pediatric Hospitalists

  • Ongoing enhancements to our fully-integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) – Epic

  • Monthly stipend available to current fellows upon signature of an offer letter

  • Professional opportunities for mentorship, growth, and advancement
