Job Description
The System Chair of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Guthrie Clinic will serve as the senior leader for anesthesiology services across the organization. This executive role oversees clinical, operational, educational, and strategic aspects of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, ensuring the highest standards of care and operational efficiency. The System Chair will work closely with medical staff, leadership teams, and other departments to advance patient care, foster a collaborative culture, and promote continuous improvement across all aspects of anesthesia.
Job Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership:
o Provide strategic direction and oversight of all anesthesia services, ensuring excellence in patient safety, clinical outcomes, and efficiency.
o Lead and manage the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine department across multiple hospital and clinic sites.
o Ensure adherence to clinical protocols and regulatory standards, fostering a culture of safety and patient-centered care.
o Lead developing and implementing clinical guidelines, policies, and procedures to ensure evidence-based practices are followed.
o Oversee the anesthesia care team model - optimizing efficiency by providing oversight of clinical site leads and their operating room utilization and processes to enhance the patient-provider experience
o Provide high-quality anesthesia care and actively participate in clinical activities, dedicating approximately 40% of the time to direct patient care
2. Strategic Planning and Growth:
o Collaborate with other clinical leaders to define and implement long-term strategic goals for the department and broader healthcare system.
o Lead initiatives to enhance anesthesia services, including expanding specialties, improving patient care, and optimizing resource allocation.
o Partner with hospital administration to manage budgets, forecast needs, and align departmental goals with organizational vision.
3. Team Development and Collaboration:
o Lead, mentor, and recruit highly skilled anesthesiology professionals, ensuring a supportive and collaborative environment.
o Oversee anesthesia staff's professional development and education, promoting a culture of continuous learning and advancement.
o Foster effective interdisciplinary collaboration across surgical specialties, nursing, and other departments involved in perioperative care.
4. Academic and Research Excellence:
o Support and promote anesthesiology and perioperative medicine research, encouraging innovation and evidence-based practices.
o Partner with residency Program Director and student clerkship directors to ensure training requirements are met and an environment of inquiry exists for an unsurpassed learning experience
o In partnership with the Chief Academic Officer and Anesthesia Program Director maintain relationships with academic institutions and professional organizations to promote the department's educational and research initiatives.
5. Operational and Financial Oversight:
o Ensure the efficient operation of the department, including scheduling, resource utilization, and performance metrics.
o Collaborate with financial officers to maintain fiscal responsibility, optimize cost-efficiency, and ensure resource allocation aligns with department needs and organizational priorities.
o Implement quality improvement initiatives and monitor performance to meet or exceed key performance indicators (KPIs).
6. Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
o Ensure all anesthesia practices comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
o Lead patient safety and risk management efforts, working closely with quality improvement teams to minimize adverse events and enhance outcomes.
Qualifications
• M.D. or D.O. degree with a board certification in Anesthesiology.
• Proven leadership experience in a large, complex healthcare system, including experience managing anesthesia services across multiple sites.
• Strong understanding of clinical operations, financial management, and strategic planning in a healthcare setting.
• Record of academic, research, and teaching excellence, with a commitment to advancing the field of anesthesiology.
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including clinicians, administrators, patients, and the community.
