Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education:

  • Master of Science/Information Science, ALA-Accredited MLS required
  • Second masters or Bachelors in Liberal Arts and Sciences or other subject area preferred

AND
Experience:

  • 2-4 years experience in an academic library as a subject specialist or liaison librarian
  • 2-3 years Information literacy instruction and assessment experience
  • 2-3 Reference and research consultation
  • Experience managing a project team or library department

Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Reference and Instructional Services has primary responsibility for coordinating reference and information literacy instruction delivered to Thomas Jefferson University East Falls students and faculty. In this role, they provide leadership in developing and managing the library's instruction services framework to support teaching, learning, research, and information literacy for East Falls learners and educators. As the manager of Gutman Library’s reference services, this librarian will coordinate, evaluate, and update reference services to support the needs of the East Falls community. As a member of the Academic Commons management team, they will evaluate existing services, plan and develop new services, and coordinate information services with Academic Commons colleagues and with teaching faculty.

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Responsible for the overall management, coordination, and assessment of all information literacy and instructional services activities, including supervision, mentoring and development, and evaluation of departmental staff and of the services provided by Gutman’s liaison librarians
  • Manages and assesses existing departmental activities, such as reference services, outreach, and programming to meet the information, education, and research needs of the Jefferson community
  • Teaches inclusive information literacy instruction synchronously and asynchronously, in-person and online in assigned liaison area of the Kanbar College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce
  • Cultivates relationships with faculty, administrators, and students to identify opportunities for Gutman Library and Academic Commons partnerships
  • Collects and analyzes data on the use of information services for evaluation and planning purposes. Helps formulate and accomplish goals and objectives for the reference and instructional services department, the Gutman Library, and Academic Commons
  • Develops and maintains specialized knowledge of the library’s databases, search interfaces, and other online resources to support the University community and match resources with information needs, assist with search strategy development, and describe management options for citation download and output
  • Designs and maintains learning materials and tools, including but not limited to the Springshare suite of products; collaborate with Scott Memorial Library librarians to streamline and maintain learning materials.
  • Develops library collections to support curriculum in assigned liaison areas
  • Stays informed of trends in library and information science, information literacy and instruction, library management and organizational development, and assigned liaison area through professional development and participation in the larger library profession
  • Serves on Academic Commons and Jefferson Libraries’ committees as needed and/or as is applicable to their essential work functions
  • Determines core knowledge requirements and coordinates skills enhancement for reference and instructional services librarians.

  • Other duties as assigned; potential weekend reference shifts.
