Under the direction of Nursing leadership, the Assistant Manager-Nursing assists in the oversight of functional area(s) of the unit and/or department including: patient care; hiring; transferring; performance improvement; assigning duties; and rewards. Develops general workflows for department/unit and prepares timely operational reports. Develops and administers proper protocols for department and/or unit. Assists in the direct supervision of unit and staff. Is a champion for patient care. Collaborates with other care team providers to assure team provides excellence in patient care. Current state: - Leaders have so many competing priorities it is difficult to focus on tasks that require more of a day shift focus - The nurse manager is trying to leader round, attend focus huddles, manager discharge SWAT metrics, follow up on colleague rounding, interview colleagues, audits, etc. all within the course of the day - Not all priorities need to be completed during day shift hours Night shift assistant managers would assist with: - Novice nurses primarily work off shifts. The night shift assistant manager role helps to provide at the elbow support for these colleagues. - Help to foster and grow critical thinking. - Support the manager in leader rounding as well as provide real time service recovery. - Sustained accountability model again with real time coaching to colleagues - Off shift leadership focus of quality metrics - Off shift 1:1 formal colleague rounding - Education support to allow education offerings during shifts - Consistency with providing huddles to all shifts - Escalation support for colleague - Allows for growth opportunities within the non-critical care areas to keep experience on the unit Financial impact: Current RN rate w/ charge range pay – $36 - $53/hr. Current assistant manager Range - $41.58-62.37/hr. Difference of $5.58 – $9.37/hr. Recruitment efforts: - Units are dependent on filling open RN requisitions by hiring new grads (which occur twice a year) and international nurses (new hires three years out) - Units get 1-2 experienced nurse interviews a year – average - Change an approved and posted bedside RN requisition to a night shift assistant manager requisition - Salary increase would be $7,488 - $17,472/annually - Change in requisition can attract outside candidates It is recommended that SJS adult non-critical care nursing units move one open RN req to a night shift assistant manager req. The units proposed for this change include: 11 gen med, 9 ortho, 8 neuro/surg/onc, 7 IMC, and 4 gen med. AMN owns the reqs below. Propose moving these RN reqs from AMN back to SJS to be flipped, posted, and filled. 4 gen med: P47006200/R1018352 7 IMC: P53404500/R1010214 8 neuro/surg/onc: P53685300/R1009695 9 ortho: P53731800/R1017120 11 gen med: P90000417/R1018385
