Job Responsibilities

Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of patients presenting to the emergency department, including taking a detailed medical history, performing physical examinations, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, and lab work.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Formulate differential diagnoses and develop treatment plans for patients with acute and critical conditions. Administer appropriate treatments, medications, and interventions as needed, including suturing wounds, splinting fractures, and providing pain management.

Emergency Procedures: Assist with or independently perform emergency procedures, such as intubation, central line placement, chest tube insertion, and cardioversion, as required for the stabilization and treatment of critically ill patients.

Collaboration: Collaborate closely with attending physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care for patients. Discuss cases, review test results, and make clinical decisions together to optimize patient outcomes.

Triage: Participate in the triage process to determine the severity of patients' conditions and prioritize care accordingly. Quickly identify patients who require immediate attention and those who can wait for evaluation.

Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment plans, and follow-up care. Ensure that patients understand their discharge instructions and provide resources for continued support.

Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough electronic medical records, documenting patient assessments, interventions, treatment plans, and responses to treatment. Proper documentation is essential for legal and continuity of care purposes.

Emergency Preparedness: Stay up-to-date on emergency protocols, including disaster response plans, and participate in drills and training exercises to ensure readiness for mass casualty situations.

Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the delivery of care in the emergency department. Review and analyze cases to identify opportunities for improvement.

Continuing Education: Pursue ongoing professional development and continuing education to stay current with the latest advances in emergency medicine and maintain licensure and certification.

Qualifications

Education:

Completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialization in Emergency Medicine or Acute Care.
Certification:

Certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with additional training or certification in Emergency Medicine.
Some states may also require Nurse Practitioners to hold national certification through organizations like the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
State Licensure:

Obtain state licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with prescriptive authority, which typically includes passing a state-specific certification exam.
Experience:

Gain relevant clinical experience, often including several years of experience as an RN in an acute care setting before transitioning to the NP role.
Experience in Emergency Medicine or a closely related field is preferred.

Certification:

State Licensure:
