Job Description: Pediatric Critical Care Physician Assistant - San Francisco, CA
Position: Physician Assistant (PA) – Pediatric Critical Care (PCICU)- Specialty: Critical Care – Pediatric
- Start Date: March 3, 2025
- Contract Duration: 6 months (with option to extend)
- Shift Type: Variable 12-hour shifts (including weekends, nights, and holidays)
- Schedule Details:
- Must provide 50% night or weekend coverage
- Option for night and weekend on-call shifts (not guaranteed)
- Shift hours: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM (Day shift), with variable scheduling
- Shift Requirement: Minimum 4 shifts per month
Key Responsibilities:
- Work in a Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCICU) providing direct care to neonates, infants, and pediatric patients.
- Manage critically ill patients including those with heart failure, on ECMO, post-operative, and pre-/post-transplant.
- ECMO management experience preferred.
- Support staff includes 1 attending, 3 nurse practitioners (NPs), and 1 fellow per team; 1 attending and 2 NPs for overnight coverage.
- Work with a variety of conditions such as cardiac catheterization, mechanical ventilation, and CRRT.
- Patient Population: Majority pediatric and neonatal, with 8 beds dedicated to neonates. Approximately 8% of patients are adults with congenital heart conditions.
- Patient Load: Average of 17-18 patients per day.
- Procedures: APPs (Advanced Practice Providers) may perform IVs, arterial lines, and possibly intubation or central lines (most procedures performed by fellows or attendings).
- Team Environment: Collaborate with a dynamic team in a teaching hospital setting.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Pediatric Cardiovascular Critical Care (PCICU), with expertise in managing ECMO, CRRT, and other intensive care treatments.
- Familiarity with cardiovascular critical care, particularly in pediatric populations, and general cardiovascular management.
- Comfortable in a high-acuity, inpatient setting, managing neonatal to adult congenital heart patients.
Certifications and Licensing:
- Required Certifications:
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Required Licenses:
- California PA License (PA candidates can apply without a CA license, but it must be obtained before starting).
- DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) license for Schedule 2 drugs (CA license required).
- COVID-19 Vaccination: Required (with booster); medical or religious exemptions considered.
