Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Advanced Practice Provider with a diverse acute care background to join our dynamic Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team in Indianapolis, IN. We are the largest one level trauma and acute surgery center in Indiana.
This is a multi-faceted role that involves providing comprehensive care across various settings and levels of patient acuity. This includes ED consults, floor and progressive care mgmt., and a robust Surgical Critical Care Service. This APP will collaborate closely with our dual-certified trauma critical care surgeons, a variety of learners from the IUSOM, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient care that are both medically and surgically complex.
Schedule:
- Supplemental, Day Shift
- 100% inpatient
- Minimum of 3-12-hour shifts per quarter, 6:00 AM start time
Key Responsibilities:
Consult Services
- Respond to all trauma activations as well as emergency general surgery activations
- Perform initial assessments, including physical exams, diagnostic tests, formulate care plans for both trauma and acute care patients
- Provide consultative services for patients in the Emergency Department and inpatient units, working with ED physicians, hospitalists, and our surgery team to ensure timely and effective patient management
Inpatient Floor and Progressive Care Unit
- Manage and coordinate care for trauma and post-surgical patients on the floor and PCU
- Conduct daily rounds, assess patient progress, adjust treatment plans, and ensure effective communication between care teams
- Monitor post-operative recovery, recognizing signs of complications or deterioration, and initiate appropriate interventions
- Assist, manage and coordinate disposition and discharge planning as well as coordinating follow-up care
Surgical Critical Care Service
- Provide direct care to critically ill trauma and surgical patient in the SCC units
- Manage ventilator settings, vasoactive medications, fluid resuscitation, and other life-support measures
- Collaborate with our surgeon intensivists and consulting specialists in the management of complex, high-acuity patients
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to decisions on patient treatment strategies
Procedures and Interventions
- Including but not limited to wound care, chest tube insertion, central line placement, arterial lines, and bedside ultrasound assessments
- Does not include any operating room time
Qualifications and Experience:
- ACNP, AGNP, FNP or PA certification required
- If AGNP or FNP, must be willing to enroll in a post graduate ACNP program within 2 years of start date
- Must be board eligible or board certified
- Experience managing critically ill patients in an ICU setting preferred
- Strong clinical judgement and ability to work in high-pressure situations
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ideal clinical background: Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience in acute care, trauma, critical care, or emergency medicine required. PAs with robust surgical and critical care rotations required

Hospital Overview
IU Health Methodist Hospital is a regional healthcare leader through its commitment to excellence, accessibility and preeminence. IU Health is building a new downtown hospital and campus, which will consolidate operations of the adjacent IU Health Methodist and University Hospitals.
