About this Role
As a Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Pediatric Heart Failure/Transplant, you will work with a team of healthcare professionals committed to care for pediatric patients with heart transplants, heart failure, and heart mechanical circulatory support devices. This APP will work throughout Primary Children’s Hospital as a specialist in pre- and post-operative cardiovascular care. This position shares responsibilities with 6 other highly skilled and experienced APPs to provide exceptional in- and out-patient care to heart transplant candidates/recipients. Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to providing inpatient heart failure & transplant care services, prepping patients for surgery, placing orders, and rounding in the cardiac intensive care unit. This APP will not surgically assist in the operating room.
Our team is involved in several national data registries and participates as a key study center for local and nationally led research. We are a highly functioning multidisciplinary team, giving you the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from exceptional surgeons, cardiologists, critical care intensivists, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and other APPs within the Heart Center.
- Salaried position with extra compensation for taking shared call with low utilization.
- Shift Details: Budgeted for 40 hours per week, variable shifts. The APP will typically work three twelve-hour daytime shifts per week coupled with a 4 hour weekly or 8 hour biweekly block, which will include rotating weekends and some holidays.
- Call Details: Call is limited to evenings/nights only and includes heart organ offer call, and will be shared coverage between the APPs.
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are accountable for the provision of patient care at the top of licensure, within their scope of practice. Licensed, credentialed and privileged to perform such duties as:
- Primarily manage inpatient pediatric heart failure/transplant patients ages 0-18 including assessment, diagnosis, medication management, treatment and timely documentation.
- Daily rounding and placing orders on inpatients with cardiologists and APP team.
- Perform cardiology consultations, outpatient visits, and patient family phone calls.
- Timely respond to acute patient changes, support staff needs, and exam results.
- Educate patient, patient's family, clinical staff, and others regarding all aspects of care.
- Consult and coordinate with other healthcare providers.
- Continually participate in weekly learning opportunities and committees to gain optimal career development and achieve best patient care and outcomes.
Advanced Practice Providers may also participate in research, utilize evidence-based practice to improve quality patient care, protocol development, care process model development, and best practice standards for assigned patient population throughout our organization.

-Within Primary Children’s Heart Center, there are more than 60+ highly skilled University of Utah physicians who work to treat the most complex congenital heart conditions, and are supported by more than 400 caregivers, including medical assistants, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, cardiac sonographers, nurses, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, social workers, genetic counselors, child life specialists, and more.
What you’ll bring:
- Utah license as a Physician Assistant (PA) or an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
- Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
- Utah State Controlled Substance License
- Federal DEA Certificate II through V
- PALS and BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers
- Previous experience with pediatric patients is highly valued, particularly experience caring for chronic illness, medically complex cases, inpatient, and/or cardiovascular patients.
