Job Summary:
  • Responsible for administering anesthetics to prevent patients from feeling pain and associated sensations. The CRNA closely monitors a patient’s vital signs during surgery and adjusts anesthetics accordingly as well as monitors patients through the first recovery stages after an operation and administers appropriate medications during recovery. The CRNA also treats patients during painful invasive procedures and childbirth, performing all assigned duties while displaying the highest standards of ethical and moral conduct as well as acting in the best interest of the support hospital mission, vision, and values to optimize the health and well-being of our patients.
A. Primary Job Responsibilities:
1. Examines the patient before and after anesthesia, obtains medical history, and writes pre- and post-anesthesia orders
2. Uses patient history and diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures
3. Creates anesthesia plans
4. Confirms that the patient is ready for anesthesia before induction
5. Helps prepare patients for emergency surgery
6. Positions patient on operating table to maximize patient comfort and surgical accessibility
7. Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal,
regional, or caudal methods
8. Monitors patient before, during, and after anesthesia and counteracts adverse reactions or complications
9. Provides and maintains life support and airway management
10. Records the type and amount of anesthesia used and the patient’s condition throughout the procedure
11. Decides when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or to be sent home following outpatient surgery
12. Follows patient as long as is appropriate in the post-anesthesia period
13. Creates treatment plans and writes orders on patient charts, which are transcribed and
implemented by appropriate staff
14. Confers with other medical professionals to determine that patient’s medical status is optimized
prior to surgery
15. Coordinates and directs work of nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologist assistants, medical
technicians, and other healthcare providers
16. Initiates appropriate specialty referrals
17. Ensures that proper patient documentation is timely, accurate, complete, and is compliant with
office, hospital, and government entities
18. Works with practice management to ensure proper compliance with billing, coding, and CPTcode assignment
19. Encourages increased patient understanding, and involvement in care and treatment decisions
20. Participates in the development of medical services, including protocols, standard procedures, and management of patient-care-related activities
21. Provides on-call coverage as necessary to care for group practice patients of other physicians
22. Gives feedback to and accepts feedback from all staff in a respectful manner
23. Acts in a positive and professional manner, complying with practice policies, procedures, and federal and state laws
24. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
B. Other Job Responsibilities:
1. Efficiently uses group practice and healthcare resources
2. Provides interdepartmental medical consultation as requested.
3. Contributes to quality improvement activities by actively participating in the medical staff
activities, serving on various committees, and suggesting and supporting process
improvements.
4. Works with the hospital or clinical peer review committee when clinical issues arise

Education/Certification/Licensing Requirements:
1. Current certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetist.
2. Valid and unrestricted Guam Nursing license
3. ACLS, PALS, NRP Certification
4. Active Controlled Substance Registration
5. Active DEA Registration

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Strong working and theoretical knowledge of anesthesia. Knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive healthcare measures. Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and the chemical processes and transformations they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
2. Ability to work in emergency situations under tremendous pressure and work long and irregular hours. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time and make accurate and immediate decisions. Ability to effectively manage and direct medical staff activities while managing the anesthetic period. Ability to receive detailed information, and express and exchange ideas orally.
