Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and administers anesthetic agents to patients to desensitize them to permit the performance of medical or surgical procedures.
  • Performs pre-anesthesia evaluation of the patient to ascertain physiological and psychological factors that influence the selection of the anesthetic agent and the formulation of the plan of anesthetic management.
  • Monitors the patient in the operating room to maintain the patient in a homeostatic condition and to assure that unnecessary injuries are not inflicted on the patient.
  • Records anesthetic information on the anesthesia chart to provide a permanent record necessary for the care of the patient, to provide material for teaching, for study, and to establish a medical-legal record.
  • Provides clinical supervision or guidance of nurse anesthesia students, paramedical, and medical students to contribute to their clinical training.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Manages Human Resources activities of the department in regard to recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
  • Current New York Licensure as a Registered Nurse and APRN.
  • Current American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) certification.
  • BLS, ACLS, and/or other specialty certifications as required by the department.
  • A minimum of 6 months of experience in anesthetizing pediatric patients is desirable.
  • Competency in pediatric airway device placement and vascular access.
  • Experience in critical and acute care areas, especially pediatric or neonatal.
  • Familiarity with EKG, arterial, central venous, and pulmonary artery pressure monitoring.
  • Skilled in respiratory management and blood gas analysis.
