UPMC in Central Pa is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Advanced Practice Provider to join our dynamic Observation Unit team. As an APP in the Observation Unit, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients who require observation but may not need inpatient admission. This role offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment focused on short-term care, assessment, and treatment.

The ideal candidate is willing and able to work 50-100% night shifts and will be eligible for a pay differential for these shifts. Flexible scheduling options are available.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess, diagnose, and treat patients in the Observation Unit.
  • Perform comprehensive physical exams and health assessments.
  • Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans based on patient evaluations.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide patient-centered care.
  • Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests and lab results.
  • Prescribe medications and manage acute or chronic health conditions.
  • Provide patient education on diagnosis, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Ensure timely discharge planning and follow-up care coordination.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the unit.
  • Document patient care and progress in electronic medical records in compliance with hospital policies.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Active Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license in Pennsylvania or ability to become licensed in PA.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner (e.g., FNP, ANP, or AGACNP) by a nationally recognized body (AANP, ANCC) or as a Physician Assistant (NCCPA
  • ACLS certification required.
  • 1-3 years of experience working as an NP/PA in an emergency department, acute care, or observation unit setting preferred, but not required. Open to new grad applicants
  • Strong clinical skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
