Company History
Nearly 40 years ago, a small-town physician named Ken
Teufel, M.D. had a solo family medicine practice in Texas –
and wow was he busy. Too busy most of the time. The good
doctor’s practice included a heavy dose of obstetrics, so Dr.
Teufel was on call all hours of the day and night, seven days
a week, 365-days a year. He was too busy caring for patients
to take time off, and because babies and illness wait for no
man, he never took a vacation. The story was much the
same for other physicians practicing in the surrounding
towns of rural Texas.
Then Dr. Teufel had an idea. After one frantically busy night
of call, he thought, “Why not sell my practice and offer to
cover for other solo practitioners who, just like me,
desperately needed some relief?” It would read
something like this: Need a vacation or long weekend?
Let Dr. Teufel cover your practice. He’ll care for your patients!
He’ll even house sit and feed your dogs (and cats and horses).
So, Dr. Teufel sold his practice in 1980. Before long, the good
doctor had to recruit other locum tenens doctors to help him
meet the demand, and by 1982 a company called Physicians
Relief Network, better known as PRN, was born.
Over the years PRN has gone through several transitions to
become what we are today: Interim Physicians. Dr. Teufel still
serves as our medical director, which is why when we say we
understand physicians and their needs, we absolutely do.
Sure, times have changed and the lone country doctor is not
as common these days, but the need for physician shift
coverage is greater than ever.
